Asian Glow is excited to announce its 2019 Kick Off Show! Asian artists often face tokenism and pressure to reference their cultural ancestry, while also being treated as monolith under the terms “Asian American” and “model minority.” Asian Glow seeks to uplift artists from the Asian diaspora in Boston–to be seen as an individual and perform as the majority without explanation or apology.
The first show of 2019 features comedians Anjan Biswas and Nora Panahi, musician LuDow, and taiko group Genki Spark on August 20 at ONCE in Somerville, MA! More artists and details will be announced soon! Tickets will be available on http://www.oncesomerville.com.
Jane Park, producer of Asian Glow said, “This year my mission is to bring the focus on creatives and organizations who are already bringing people together and host their own events.” The kick off billing is a powerhouse of community building, including: Genki Spark, which promotes and supports the voice and visibility of Asian women while advocating respect for all; Anjan Biswas, who hosts CitySide Comedy in Brighton; and LuDow, co-creator of Bridgeside Entertainment, a premier hip hop presenter and host of the Graffiti Alley Cyphers in Central Square.
Two additional installments will follow in the fall, with exact dates and venues to be announced. For more information, interview/press inquiries, or to join the mailing list contact Jane Park at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Last year, Asian Glow included three independent showcases in three different venues across Boston. The series featured 21 individual artists and artist groups of different genres, including poetry, comedy, burlesque, music, and magic, and attracted an audience around 80 people per show.
Asian Glow is made possible (in part) by a Live Arts Boston grant from the Boston Foundation.
